Digital Counsel — Kyung-Me Digital Commission

2026

UX/UI Design, Narrative Systems

About

I collaborated with Digital Counsel on an interactive digital commission created for Hyundai Artlab in partnership with artist Kyung-Me.

Hyundai Artlab is Hyundai Motor Company’s global arts initiative supporting collaborations with artists, museums, curators, and cultural institutions through exhibitions, editorial projects, and digital commissions. As part of its Digital Commissions program, artists are invited to create original online works that explore contemporary visual culture through web-based interaction and storytelling.

For this commission, the goal was to translate Kyung-Me’s symbolic and reflective drawings into an immersive digital experience that preserved the atmosphere and pacing of the original work while introducing interaction, navigation, and motion as narrative

The experience was structured as a nonlinear scroll environment inspired by recurring themes in the artist’s work: repetition, transformation, memory, and cyclical self-reinvention. The project invites viewers to journey through an ink drawn dreamscape.

Project Goals

• Create a contemplative browsing pace rather than rapid content consumption

• Bridge user interaction with narrative progression through scrolling and transitions

• Maintain the emotional atmosphere of the drawings during translation into a digital medium

• Balance experimentation with navigational clarity

• Create a tactile and immersive interaction experience

• Make individual drawings feel interconnected

My Role

• Designed interaction frameworks and narrative navigation systems for the digital artwork

• Developed wireframes, responsive layouts, and interaction flows using Hyundai Artlab’s brand system across desktop and mobile

• Defined scrolling behaviors, transitions, pacing systems, progress indicators, intro outro sequence.

• Translated abstract artistic themes into interaction patterns and navigable digital sequences

• Collaborated with stakeholders, developers, and the artist throughout concept development and implementation

Constraints

• Designing experimental interactions within the limitations of a browser-based experience

• Balancing atmospheric ambiguity with navigational clarity and usability

• Technical implementation constraints limited the complexity of certain motion and interaction concepts

• Stakeholder and production considerations narrowed some of the more experimental interaction directions during development

• Ensuring responsive consistency across desktop and mobile experiences

Reflection

The final experience translated Kyung-Me’s imagery into an accessible digital format while maintaining a strong sense of pacing and visual cohesion across devices.

The project also highlighted the challenges of building experimental cultural interfaces within browser-based technical constraints and collaborative production environments. Many interaction ideas required balancing artistic ambiguity with usability, accessibility, and implementation feasibility.

If revisited, I would further develop the project’s motion systems, sound integration, and transition behaviors to create a more responsive and immersive experience. I would integrate some early, experimental navigation explorations and integrate a bookmarking system to engage the user with the work closely.
